Viremar

In the western reaches of Norgas, past the sprawling dunes of The World’s Grave, lies Viremar. Aptly named, this section of the province is almost entirely grassland. Stretching from the edges of The World’s Grave up into the northern ranges and down against the southwestern border of the province, Viremar is a veritable sea of grassy foothills and fertile land ranging fifteen hundred miles east against the southern border, and nine hundred miles lengthwise into the frigid north. Within the verdant boundaries of the grasslands lies most of the settlements within Norgas including its capital, Kirgas. Being the most populated area in the province, the land is far more developed. Well-worn roads and trails criss-cross the plains. Farmland colors the hills with vibrant yellows and sprouts of dull brown stretching far and away. Small towns dot the roadside, some home to no more than a dozen people, others with thriving main strips teeming with activity. Viremar, with its natural beauty and ample resources, is truly the heart of the province.

Taking up the southwestern corner of the province, Viremar borders The World’s Grave and stretches down into the south eventually meeting the southern mountain ranges, where the grasslands taper off into heavily wooded foothills.

History

For as far back as anyone can remember, Viremar has always been the safest place in Norgas. The abundance of natural resources and hospitable temperatures made the grasslands the first place to be settled in Norgas, and where the capitol would eventually be built.

Viremar’s proximity to the southern border allowed it reasonable trade routes to the rest of the continent. In addition to this, other land routes across the southern border are made much longer and more hazardous by the giant desert stretching most of the way across the continent. This being the case, Viremar soon became the largest trade hub in the province, handling imports and exports for the entirety of Norgas. This region would prosper, being given access to foreign goods that the rest of the province would never get to see and attain a level of luxury that the rest of the province could not afford. It was only natural that the seat of power be located in Viremar.

Norgas has always been a backwater of the continent. Most of the province is treacherous at best and lacking in natural resources and exports. Characterized by frigid mountains, cold barren foothills, and the largest desert on the continent, there are few places to live and even fewer people who want to live in them. The trade routes between towns outside of Viremar are incredibly dangerous due to strong weather, hazardous roads and trails, and occasionally attacks made by bandit groups.

Decades after its settling, once the region had risen to prominence, northern lowlanders would plague the trade routes within Viremar, stealing and looting caravans. In response, private militaries would form to protect the goods of different estates. Despite this, these attacks would remain relatively frequent.

During this time, a certain family raided a lowland town. This ended horribly for both sides. Soldiers lost their lives to frost and starvation, getting lost within the frigid foothills of the Icasz. Eventually, they would find their target and, spurred on by grief and anger, decimate the entire town. Villagers who escaped would flee into the mountains, chased by soldiers. Both villagers and military alike would lose their lives to an Icasz’s Bane that had been driven down from the mountains proper by the promise of easy pickings. This escapade, estimated at a length of one month at conception, would end three months later with catastrophic casualties. Those who did return to Kirgas would speak of unending snow and ice, barren wastes, and demons lurking within the Icasz. No other families would attempt to raid the north after this. Bandit attacks would also lessen.

Viremar keeps to itself, passing legislature by Viremar for Viremar. The disenfranchised population holds nothing but contempt for their capital but do not have the means to work against it.

Environments Around Viremar

Central and Southern Viremar

Viremar is the greenest area of Norgas by far. With an abundance of wet, fertile soil, the grassland is home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Central Viremar in particular has always been the most hospitable area of Norgas. This is because it is the only area in Norgas that naturally produces loamy soil. The high precipitation within the area as well as the constant presence of plant roots creates the perfect climate for fertile farmland.

The heart of Viremar, at the center of the grassland and closer to the mountainous borders of the province, is much cooler. Here, the dry heat dissipates entirely. Instead, the land is very wet and humid. The humidity and high precipitation in this area lead to a very wet heat, one which stains the clothes. In the spring and summer months, Viremar is sodden. Both its people and its land. Stepping out into the street, one immediately notices the dense air, like a blanket weighing upon the land. The scent of mud and wet grass is ever present, pungent and rich. Luckily, as the fall and winter seasons roll around, the temperature plummets, yielding respite from the suffocating heat.

Within central Viremar lies the bulk of the farmlands and cities. The main crop grown within central Viremar are yams and other edible roots. The land around urban areas are made clear to farm these crops in bulk. The grasses must be kept back and away from the farmlands as their roots are long and can encroach upon the crops. The grasses here grow tall, sometimes reaching five feet. There are few trees except those which citizens plant. Because of this, most trees appear in and around populated areas and are cared for by the residents.

Finally, Viremar stretches down to meet the southern and southeastern border of Norgas. The temperature here is almost identical to that of central Viremar. The sun beats down upon the foothills, the air is heavy with moisture, and the Kirstemm blankets the land. The foothills eventually taper off into the mountainous border of the province.
